Día 1: San Sebastián - Lekunberri (70km)

  • Departure time: 9:00 a.m. from Ondarreta Beach.

  • Distance: Approximately 70 km.

  • Elevation: Climbing stage with a demanding profile.

  • Recommended route:

    • Start by riding along La Concha Bay and through the center of San Sebastián.

    • Follow the GI-2130 towards Hernani and then Andoain.

    • From Andoain, take the GI-2130 or GI-2131 road towards Leitza, where the climb becomes steeper.

    • Continue on the N-130 from Leitza to Lekunberri.

  • Suggested stops:

    • Hernani: A good place to stretch your legs.

    • Andoain: Possibility to have a coffee.

    • Leitza: A charming village where you can rest and eat.

  • Arrival in Lekunberri: Estimated around 3:00 p.m.

    What to visit in Lekunberri:

    • Plazaola Greenway: Although not the best option for a road cycling route, Lekunberri is the starting point of this popular greenway. You can walk a short stretch to admire the landscape.

    • Greenway Park and the old train station: The Greenway information center is located in the old station, a picturesque spot with details about the area.

    • Nature and rural surroundings: Lekunberri is a village surrounded by meadows and hills. Simply walking around and enjoying the tranquility is one of the best activities.

Día 2: Lekunberri - Logroño (120km)

  • Departure time: 9:00 a.m.

  • Distance: Approximately 100–120 km.

  • Elevation: Transition stage with a long descent.

  • Recommended route:

    • From Lekunberri, take the N-130 towards Irurtzun.

    • Follow the A-15 skirting Pamplona and take the N-111 towards Puente la Reina and Estella.

    • Continue on the road from Estella until you reach Viana and, finally, Logroño.

  • Suggested stops:

    • Puente la Reina: An iconic spot on the Camino de Santiago.

    • Estella: A beautiful town with a historic center worth visiting.

  • Arrival in Logroño: Estimated around lunchtime or early afternoon, at about 3:00 p.m.

  • What to visit in Logroño:

    • Calle Laurel: A must-visit. This street and its surroundings are the heart of tapas and wine in the city.

    • Co-Cathedral of Santa María de la Redonda: An architectural gem right in the historic center.

    • Puente de Piedra: One of the city’s icons, a medieval bridge over the Ebro River that is part of the Camino de Santiago.

    • Old Town: Strolling through the pedestrian streets of the historic center is a real delight.

    • Food Market (Mercado de Abastos): An ideal place to discover the local products of La Rioja.

Día 3: Logroño - Vitoria (80km)

  • Departure time: 9:00 a.m.

  • Distance: Approximately 85 km.

  • Elevation: Shorter stage with the Puerto de Herrera as the main highlight.

  • Recommended route:
    Leave Logroño via the A-2124 towards Laguardia.
    Cross through the vineyard area of Rioja Alavesa along the A-3212.
    Continue the route until you reach Vitoria-Gasteiz.

  • Suggested stops:

    • Laguardia: An impressive walled medieval town with a panoramic viewpoint.

    • Elciego: To see the spectacular Frank Gehry–designed hotel at the Marqués de Riscal winery.

  • Arrival in Vitoria: Estimated around lunchtime, at about 3:00 p.m.

  • What to visit in Vitoria-Gasteiz:

    • Cathedral of Santa María (Old Cathedral): Famous for Ken Follett’s novel The Pillars of the Earth and its “Open for Works” restoration project.

    • Medieval Quarter: One of the best preserved in the Basque Country, with narrow cobbled streets.

    • Plaza de la Virgen Blanca: The heart of the city, home to the monument to the Battle of Vitoria and the statue of Celedón.

    • Green Belt: Vitoria is renowned for its cycling infrastructure and the green belt of parks surrounding the city.

Día 4: Vitoria- Bilbao (85km)

  • Departure time: 9:00 a.m.

  • Distance: Approximately 80–90 km.

  • Elevation: Stage with several short climbs and mountain passes.

  • Recommended route:
    Leave Vitoria via the N-622 and take secondary roads to avoid the highway.
    The most popular route goes through the Puerto de Barazar.
    The descent will take you to Lemoa and Amorebieta.
    Continue along the N-634 or on secondary roads until you reach Bilbao.

  • Suggested stops:

    • Legutio: A village at the foot of the Ullibarri-Gamboa reservoir.

    • Areatza: Before the climb to Barazar, a great spot for a final breather.

  • Arrival in Bilbao: Estimated in the afternoon, around 2:00–3:00 p.m.

  • What to visit in Bilbao:

    • Guggenheim Museum: Frank Gehry’s masterpiece and the undisputed icon of the city.

    • Old Town (Casco Viejo): The famous “Seven Streets” are the historic heart. Don’t miss Plaza Nueva to enjoy some pintxos.

    • Puente de la Salve: A bridge that connects the Guggenheim Museum with the city center.

    • Arriaga Theater: An impressive neo-baroque building.

    • Ribera Market: The largest covered market in Europe, ideal for tasting local cuisine.

Día 5: Bilbao- San Sebastian (125km)

  • Departure time: 9:00 a.m.

  • Distance: Approximately 100–125 km.

  • Elevation: A stage with more elevation gain if done along the coast.

  • Recommended route (Coastal option, more challenging):
    Leave Bilbao via the BI-631 and follow the coastal route N-634.
    Pass through Bakio, Bermeo, Gernika, Deba, Zumaia, Zarautz, and Orio.
    The cliff views and constant ups and downs make this stage one of the most spectacular.

  • Recommended route (Inland option, smoother):
    Leave Bilbao via the N-634 towards Eibar.
    Continue through Elgoibar, Azkoitia, and Azpeitia.
    Descend to Orio and follow the road to San Sebastián.

  • Suggested stops:

    • Coastal route: Bermeo, Gernika, and Zumaia (for its spectacular flysch).

    • Inland route: Eibar and Azpeitia.

  • Arrival in San Sebastián: Estimated around 3:00–4:00 p.m.

  • What to visit in San Sebastián:

    • La Concha Beach: The city’s most iconic bay, perfect for relaxing after the ride.

    • Old Town (Casco Antiguo): Its narrow streets host the highest concentration of pintxo bars in the world. Don’t miss Constitution Square.
